The Benco Story

It all started when Benjamin Cohen, our founder, began selling dental instruments out of a 100-pound carrying case in 1924. Based in Philadelphia, PA, he traveled by train and called on dentists within walking distance of the train station at every stop along the line.

After six years and miles of shoe leather, Benjamin moved to northeastern Pennsylvania with his wife, Kitty, and opened Benco Dental in 1930. Their son, Larry, joined the business in 1959. Fresh out of graduate school and a short stint in the Army, Larry quickly became the company's #1 sales rep.

Benco Dental won customers and grew exponentially until disaster struck in 1972. Hurricane Agnes swept into Pennsylvania, drowning the company's headquarters with 8.5 feet of water. That same year, Benjamin passed away.

Our team mobilized, customers stuck by us, and we persevered. Sales continued to grow. By 1980, we'd found a permanent home just a few miles from where it all started. Today, Benco Dental operates over 40 regional showrooms. Four distribution centers—in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Texas and Florida—service customers in 30 states. Benco Dental employs over 1,000 associates and serves well over 20,000 customers.

Larry has become our semi-retired Chairman. The company is now led by Larry's children: Charles, our President, and Richard, Senior Vice President. Together with the entire Benco Dental team, they've taken Benco Dental into the next century with innovations like Painless, our industry-leading electronic ordering system, and a unique mission—"We deliver The Benco Difference: be accountable, create Benco boosters, grow customer earnings, continuous improvement."
